Last week, the Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos, played host to a significant number of heavyweight entertainers as some of them were honoured in the first-ever Afrobeats Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
At the event, showbiz personalities such as Edi Lawani, Sunday Are, Kenny Ogungbe, Dayo Adeneye, Obi Asika and DJ Jimmy Jatt were inducted into the Afrobeats Hall of Fame, while the lifetime achievement recognition awards went to Fela Kuti, Tony Odili, King Sunny Ade, Chief Ebenezer Obey and Sikiru Barrister.
Comedian, Bovi, and singer, Dbanj, were the hosts of the main event and they did a good job of navigating the audience through incredible performances from artistes such as Wizkid, Kcee, Flavour, Omawumi, Tesh Carter, Shina Peters and Omawunmi.
Made, Fela’s grandchild was also on hand to receive the award on behalf of his grandfather. He said, “I feel honoured and blessed to receive this award on behalf of ‘abami eda’. Thank you for enjoying Fela’s music.”
Singer, Barry Jhay, also received the award on his father, Sikiru Ayinde, aka Barrister’s behalf. After collecting the award, he said, “We are here to celebrate my father’s life as the supreme master of fuji music. Sikiru Ayinde was an astute storyteller who used his music to shape opinions.”
