Tanzania, on Monday, said it had negotiated a safe passage with Russia for its students studying in a Ukrainian university near Kharkiv, according to local media sources.
ITV Tanzania also confirmed that the Tanzanian embassy in Moscow had been alerted on the development and had subsequently mandated its nationals studying at the Sumy State University in Eastern Ukraine, to proceed with caution toward the Russian border.
“A statement from the Tanzanian embassy… called on the students to head to Sudja, where they will be received by the Russian army.
“From Sudja, they will be transported by the army to Belgorod (in Russia), where they will be welcomed by officials from the Tanzanian embassy based in Moscow for processing, before heading back home to Tanzania,” the official report stated.
“The embassy has also advised the students to leave the university in groups, and carry the Tanzanian flag for identification while passing through the safe corridor,” it added.
The declaration of safe corridor for the African emigrants unveiled on the heels of diplomatic talks with Russia.
Although the number of Tanzanian students to be evacuated from Sumy was not fully ascertained as at the time of filing this report, a leading daily newspaper in Tanzania, Mwananchi, noted, however, that over 400 Tanzanian students in Odesa and 200 in Kyik had already been promptly evacuated from the war-torn Ukraine.
