The Bursar of Ekiugbo Grammar School in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State and the chairman of the school’s Parents Teachers Association, have been arrested by operatives of the state police command over alleged theft of N1.5million school fund in their possession.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the duo were nabbed and kept in custody by operatives from the Ughelli ‘A’ Division in connection with the alleged theft.
It was alleged that the female bursar and the PTA chairman were trailed to the school gate and robbed of the money as they were returning from a bank in Ughelli.
One of the sources told journalists that the school principal had earlier instructed the bursar and PTA chairman to withdraw a sum of N200,000 to offset an outstanding bill of workers repairing properties damaged by protesting students some time in 2021.
“They went to the bank and along the line, they both confused themselves. Instead of withdrawing the said amount as directed by the principal, they went ahead to do another thing by withdrawing the sum of N1.5million. Who sent them?
On their way coming from the bank, they were followed by unknown gunmen to the school gate and the money was snatched from them”, the source alleged.
But the Principal of Ekiugbo Grammar School, Onojegharho Ese, could not be reached for comments on the incident.
A security source attached to Ughelli A’ Division, who confirmed the incident however, disclosed that the bursar and the PTA Chairman who were nabbed by the police over the incident have been granted bail as leadership of the community waded into the matter.
When contacted, the police public relations officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe told our correspondent that the allegation of armed robbers attacking the two suspects at the school gate could not be substantiated, adding that investigations were still ongoing in the matter.
He added that the police would stop at nothing in the efforts to unravel whether or not it was a case of conspiracy.
