Four policemen in the convoy of the Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatude Fashola; and his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday sustained minor injuries in an auto crash in Delta State.
The PUNCH gathered that the accident happened during an inspection around Asaba end of the bridge head when the driver lost control and crashed into a deep pit.
An eyewitness, John Okorie, said the police van conveying the victims, while negotiating the bend leading to the construction site of the second Niger Bridge at the Asaba end, lost control and crashed into a deep pit where the victims were injured.
It was gathered that the police vehicle was on top speed to meet up with the ministers’ vehicles before veering off the road and crashed.
“Although the driver survived without a scratch, the four victims struggled while shouting for help as residents of the area thronged the scene of the accident to save their lives,” the witness said.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the victims only sustained minor injuries.
“It was just a minor accident. There was no fatality at all,” he said.
Earlier, Gambari, Fashola, Ngige and other top government officials walked through the 1.6km Second Niger Bridge and gave assurance that the project will be completed in October.
