The Ogun State Ministry of Environment has shut an illegal gas skid in the Pakuro area of Mowe in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, who ordered the immediate closure of the skid, said it was established in a densely populated area.
He gave the directive on Friday when an enforcement team of the ministry led by Mrs Bushurat Owodunni carried out the exercise.
Owodunni said the operator had earlier been served an abatement notice for contravening environmental safety standards.
She pointed out that the unwholesome act could cause fatalities and destruction of property if the situation was not urgently addressed.
“The Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration will not keep mute and allow something drastic to happen to the lives and property of citizens in Ogun State.
“The Ministry of Environment will not hesitate to shut down any illegal gas skid established in densely populated areas,” she said.
Owodunni said the ministry sprang into action when it received a distress call from a resident in the area.
She urged intending operators to take necessary approval measures before embarking on the business.
She implored residents to always report any illegal or unsafe facility within their localities to the ministry, in order to avert tragedies that could cause gas explosions.
Speaking, a resident in the area, Mrs Eucharia Adams, commended the state government for its swift response, just as she called on people to always abide by the environmental laws of the state.
