Tragedy struck on Saturday when 12 persons were burnt to death in an auto crash on the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Expressway in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.
It was learnt that the accident, which occurred in Otte at about 7am, resulted from a head-on collision between a commercial Toyota Hummer bus and a Volvo truck loaded with cement.
Six of the passengers were rescued alive with burns injury while the deceased passengers were burnt beyond recognition.
Sources in the area said the trailer was coming from a depot in one of the North-Central states when it collided with the passenger bus heading for Sokoto State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps blamed the accident on speed limit violation and route violation by the drivers.
The Sector Commander, Jonathan Owoade, who confirmed the incident, said 18 passengers were on board in the vehicle, adding that the injured were taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for treatment while the corpses were deposited in the morgue of the same hospital.
The Kwara State Fire Service, which took part in the rescue operation, urged drivers to be more careful on the highway.
