Fc Zurich Lagos-born forward Tosin Aiyegun is among four new players called up by Benin Republic for this month’s four-nation tournament in Turkey to help the country prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Stand-in Squirrels coach Moussa Latoundji’s 23-man squad included dual nationals Aiyegun and defender Mohamed Tijani, who have opted to play for the Beninese.
Tosin has Nigerian lineage and Ivory Coast-born Tijani, a central defender for Czech side Teplice, have also chosen to play for Benin.
Aiyegun was born in Lagos June 28, 1998 and began his career at Real Sapphire FC. He joined Latvian side FK Ventspils in 2017 and spent two seasons there, scoring 33 goals in 72 league games, before a move to Zurich in 2019.
This season, he’s scored three goals with three assists in 13 games for the Swiss side.
Also, Italy-based young striker Ange Josue Chibozo of giants Juventus is among the four players chasing their first appearance for the Squirrels after being named in the squad.
Home-based goalkeeper Guillaume Agbegninou completes the list of debutants after excelling for local side ASVO.
