The Senate resumed from Easter break but suspended plenary on Tuesday over the death of a member of the House of Representatives, Bassey Ekpenyong, who represented Oron Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State.
The House of Representatives had on Monday announced postponement of resumption from the break over the renovation of the National Assembly Complex.
The Senate and the House had on April 14, 2022, adjourned plenary till April 26.
At a sitting that lasted a few minutes on Tuesday, the Senate adjourned plenary till Wednesday (today) over the death of Ekpenyong on Sunday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
It is the tradition of the Senate and House to adjourn plenary on the next sitting day after the death of a member of either chamber.
While the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, presided over the session on Tuesday, the Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, moved the motion for the adjournment, which the Minority Whip, Senator Philip Aduda, seconded.
The Senate, moments before adjourning till Wednesday, observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased.
The Clerk to the House, Mr Yahaya Danzariya, had on Monday announced an indefinite postponement of resumption from break due to the renovation work.
He made the announcement in a statement which was published on all the verified social media platforms of the chamber including Twitter, @HouseNGR.
