Feyenoord striker, Cyriel Dessers, has insisted that his side deserved to make it through to the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League ahead of Olympique Marseille.
The Dutch side progressed to the maiden final of the newly formed third tier European competition after playing a goalless draw at the Stade Vélodrome on Thursday, a result that saw the Eredivisie side qualify for the finals 3-2 on aggregate having won the first leg in Holland.
Feyenoord will face Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma in the final billed for May 25 at the Arena Kombëtare in Tirana, Albenia.
Dessers, who grabbed a brace in the 3-2 semi-final win, is the competition’s top scorer with 10 goals from 12 games while Roma’s Tammy Abraham is second with nine goals from 12 games as well.
Dessers says although the magnitude of the result they’ve achieved as a team is yet to sink in, he believes they deserved the final spot more than Marseille.
“It’s not quite coming in yet. To achieve such a result in Velodrome’s cauldron is fantastic. We’re just going to Tirana, to that final,” Dessers told telegraaf.nl after the game.
“We never quite got into our game, but that was also the merit of Marseille.
“If you see how we fought and gave away a few great opportunities, I think we deserved to be in the final. It wasn’t our best game, but we showed that we can not only play beautiful football, like in the first game, but that we can also fight for a result. Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that we would go to a European final?”
