The Lagos State Government has stressed the need for residents to be sensitised to the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence in communities across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said this, according to a statement on Sunday, during its fifth Local Government town hall meeting held at Mushin.
She said, “The theme, ‘It’s on us to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence,’ emphasised the need for this forum to be organised, to increase awareness about domestic and sexual violence amongst members of the community, inform them of the provisions of the law and support services available for victims and survivors.
“Statistics in the past year showed a high prevalence of SGBV in Mushin LGA, hence the need for all participants present to join hands with the government in the fight against SBGV.”
The Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Mr. Emmanuel Bamigboye, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Mr. Babatunde Kehinde, encouraged residents of Mushin to speak up if they are subjected to violence in order to curb the rate of SGBV in society.
The Chairman of Child Protection Network, Mrs. Ronke Oyelakin, enlightened the audience on the various forms of SGBV and urged Mushin residents to endeavour to be active bystanders and expose abusers.
