No fewer than five governorship aspirants under the platform of All Progressive Congress in Sokoto State has called on the leadership of the party to adopt direct primary for the upcoming election.
The aspirants, in a letter obtained by The PUNCH, signed by five of them, and addressed to the national chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, said the direct primary will help the party to avert any future litigation that may arise after the indirect primaries.
They wrote, “We write to request for the direct primary in the approaching primary election by our dear political party.
“The request is made in consistence with the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and out Party’s constitution.
“It is also made to avert any future litigation that may arise after the indirect primaries due to the pending court litigation in Sokoto.
“We the undersigned gubernatorial aspirants, hereby, resolve to request for direct primary election as one of the options recognized by law.”
The aspirants that signed the letter are Abdullahi Balarabe Salame, Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir, Senator Abubakar Umar Gada, Ambassador Faruk Malami Yabo and Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Gumbi.
Meanwhile, a source who is close to one of the aspirants confirm that Honourable Yusuf Suleiman, a former minister for transportation, has promised to signed the letter tomorrow.
Recalled that seven aspirants including the governorship candidate of the party in 2019 general election, Honourable Ahmed Aliyu, collected the expression of interest to contest in the state.
