Justice Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Monday, convicted a fraudster, Oluseyi Ajewole, for offences bordering on Internet fraud.
The judge also ordered the forfeiture of a duplex situated at Lekki, in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, worth over N60m and one RS 350 Lexus car, worth more than N6m, all belonging to Ajewole, which he procured with proceeds of his illegal activities.
Ajewole, who was based in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was prosecuted alongside seven other fraudsters by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The other convicts, according to a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Wilson Uwajuaren, are Ebenezer Apata, Obadun Taofeek, Ayeni Kayode, Alade Daniel, Ojo Tobi, Adeyemi Segun and Akinrinmola Olumide.
“The convicts were among the 30 fraud suspects arrested by EFCC operatives during a sting operation in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on April 26, 2022, except for Adeyemi Segun, who was arrested at Ogbomosho, Oyo State, sometime in October 2021.
The convicts, who were prosecuted on separate charges, pleaded guilty.
The prosecution lawyers, Innocent Mbachie, Sesan Ola and Andrew Akoja, reviewed the facts of the cases and narrated the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the defendants.
They also tendered several incriminating materials recovered from them at the point of arrest, which were admitted in evidence.
The EFCC counsel urged the court to consider the guilty pleas of the defendants, their extra-judicial statements, the evidence of the prosecution, as well as the provisions of the law in convicting them.
Delivering judgement on the cases, Justice Sani pronounced the defendants guilty of their respective charges.
The judge, while sentencing the convicts to various jail terms, ordered the forfeiture of the items used as instruments of the crime and acquired with proceeds of the illegal activities by the convicts to the Federal Government.
