The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested one Nweke Chadikaobi for assaulting his niece, 10-year-old Oluebube Emmanuel.
Chadikaobi was arrested at Range View Estate, in the Dawaki area of Abuja, PUNCH Metro could confirm.
In a statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the Command’s Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, ordered the arrest of the culprit after a video showing how Oluebube was battered went viral on social media.
The statement read in part, “The CP, Babaji Sunday, ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of the suspect, and the recovery of the minor for medical attention and other forms of intervention needed in the protection of her human rights and dignity.”
The video, obtained by PUNCH Metro, showed some adults tendering to the minor with bruises on her back, while she alleged that her aunt’s husband had beaten her up for bedwetting.
She said the suspect who was arrested on Tuesday, upon interrogation admitted to the crime, stating that the minor bed wets and committed other offences.
The police confirmed to our correspondent that the victim had been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons.
“The 10-year-old victim has been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Person, in order for her to get special care,” Adeh stated.
