Cyriel Dessers has bid Feyenoord farewell, saying he might return to the club someday despite their failure to sign him permanently, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 27-year-old was on a season loan at Feyenoord, where he scored 20 goals and recorded six assists in 44 games for the Dutch club.
“Thank you Feyenoord for the time,” Dessers said in a video he posted on Twitter. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to continue with you but I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Maybe someday I’ll be back here. Thank you for everything.”
Genk also confirmed that Dessers would be returning to the club after Feyenoord officially informed them that they would not be exercising the purchase option of €4m for the Nigerian striker.
“Feyenoord has officially informed our club that it will not activate Cyriel Dessers’ purchase option,” a club statement noted.
“This means that Dessers will rejoin Genk in preparation. We wish Dessers good luck with the international competitions and are looking forward to seeing you again in blue and white.”
The Nigeria international left Genk on transfer deadline last summer after he was overshadowed by compatriot Paul Onuachu.
And with Onuachu still at the club, Dessers could yet leave Genk this summer. However, any potential bidder will need to meet the club’s valuation of the player.
The Eagles star was arguably Feyenoord’s best player in UEFA Conference League this season where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals.
Currently on international duty with Nigeria, Dessers scored against Mexico in the Eagles’ 2-1 loss to the El Tri on Sunday and is expected to lead the team’s attack when they face Ecuador in New Jersey on Thursday.
