StarTimes, in partnership with the Africa Movie Academy Awards, has rewarded winners of the just concluded StarTimes-AMAA Short Film Festival, popularly called The Shorts.
A budding filmmaker, Enobong Nkata, won the overall prize for her work, ‘Mama’s Song’, and was awarded $3000, while Frank Dzikunu from Ghana emerged the first runner-up with his animation titled, ‘Sad Story of Kojo’, and carted away $2000.
Frank Abasiekong was declared the second runner-up for his crime video, ‘Room 10’, and was rewarded with $1000.
An Ugandan, Edmond Tamali, won the special category of the best documentary with his work ‘Ateker’ and was given a cheque of $1000.
Speaking at the event held in Lagos during the week, the Chief Executive Officer, StarTimes Nigeria, Alex Jian, stated that the event was to reward excellence, creativity, hard work and originality, and to provide a bigger platform for talented young people to achieve their dreams.
He said, “During the process, we noticed the great potential of the industry, and we are surprised by many young content creators. They are passionate, hard-working and full of inspiration.”
He pledged that StarTimes will continue to support young Nigerian filmmakers. He said, “AMAA has been devoted to encouraging the development of the movie industry. Now, we are joining hands to support new faces. We are honoured to be working with AMAA on this beautiful cause, while we keep bringing fresh new content to our audience.”
On her part, AMAA’s founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, expressed happiness over the synergy with Startimes to reward young filmmakers.
Speaking on the importance of the awards, she said, “We have to clear the stage for young and up-and-coming artistes. If we catch them young and structure them properly, it will actually help us to have better films.”
