After failing to secure the job to be the coach of the Malian national team, former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has been linked to the vacant role of Vice President of French side Girondins Bordeaux.
According to France 3 Nouvelle Aquitaine (via Girondins4ever), Rohr is one of the candidates the French outfits are considering for the exalted office, second only to club owner Gérard López.
Despite dropping to Ligue 2, the second tier of the French topflight league, Bordeaux are considered one of the top clubs in France with a history of over 140 years.
Since being sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation in December 2021, the Franco-German has been without a job.
The 68-year-old remains a favourite at the club where he spent 12 years (1977 to 1989) as a player making a total of 441 appearances, before managing the club across three different spells in the 1990s guiding them to the UEFA Cup final in 1996, where they lost to Bayern Munich over two legs, 0–2 away and 1–3 at home.
According to reports in the French publication, the former Eagles coach is being considered for the vice president role.
“At the dawn of the new 2022-2023 season, which will take place in Ligue 2, this position should have a clear and defined representative.
“The team mentioned a few days ago the names of Stéphane Martin, who has already held the position in the past, but also of Klaus Allofs. According to France 3 Nouvelle Aquitaine, it could be Gernot Rohr. Free of any contract since his separation from Nigeria, Gernot Rohr has probably been contacted for this post of deputy president.”
Meanwhile, a French journalist Vincent Romain said Rohr dismissed the reports linking him with the Bordeaux job.
“Gernot Rohr, I spoke to him on the phone this afternoon; he told me that it’s fake news. It was a partner who called him to propose the idea to him.
“But he has never had any contact with the management of the Girondins. He does not have the profile of vice president at all.”
