Gombe State Police command on Monday confirmed the death of a resident with two others sustaining degrees of injuries in the renewed Lunguda/Waja communal conflict.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mahid Abubakar, in a telephone interview with our correspondent described the attack as unfortunate.
He stated that efforts were on to ensure that the attack was not witnessed in Nyuwar again, adding that the command would change tactics in ensuring peaceful co-existence.
Abubakar said, “One person died, while two others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
“We can’t disclose our next line of action but we will change our tactics. Already, personnel including those undercover have been deployed there to ensure peaceful co-existence.”
Meanwhile, the state government has expressed sadness over the clash as Governor Muhammadu Yahaya bemoaned the cause of the perennial attacks, while promising to change approach.
Yahaya, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government Prof. Ibrahim Njodi said, “There is hardly any dividing line between the people of Lunguda and Waja in lieu of their long standing relationship covering critical areas like inter marriages, cuisines as well as cultural heritage and ceremonies.”
The governor, however, warned that henceforth, the state government under his leadership “will not tolerate any person or group of persons who are bent on instigating violence in the area to achieve their selfish desires.”
He said the time has come for his administration to deploy a new approach in dealing with the crisis which has so far claimed lives and properties worth millions of naira.
