Residents of Isheri-Igando, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, may soon heave a sigh of relief as the streetlights along the axis are undergoing repairs by officials of the state government.
Officials of the Light-Up Lagos Initiative were sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday fixing the streetlights.
PUNCH Metro gathered that lights on the stretch of the road stopped working over two years ago, as criminal elements took advantage of the situation to dispossess commuters of their valuables.
According to residents, robbery attacks in the area take place early in the morning and at night from around 8pm.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was a victim of a robbery attack on the Diamond Estate end of the road.
He said, “It is good that they are fixing the streetlights, especially for people like us who close from work a bit late. I was robbed alongside my friends on our way home and our belongings were collected.”
An official source told our correspondent that the generator powering the lights became faulty over two years ago and a new one had just been bought.
The source said, “Our officials have been there since Friday fixing the faulty lights. Although a new generator was bought to replace the former one, we later found out that some of the lights were no longer working.”
He also disclosed that some of the streetlights were tampered with by vandals who specialised in removing cables.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, said, “The state government is currently retrofitting the streetlights across the state, whereby the brown dull bulbs are being replaced with the LCD types so that they can be brighter and cheaper to run. So, the same applies to that area.”
