The family of a trader, Nwanneka Abugu, who has a cancerous tumour, has sought the help of the public in raising funds for her surgery.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the sickness started when the victim felt some aches in her mouth.
The pain was said to have increased, as she visited a hospital for help.
Her daughter, Peace, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said as her mother’s medical condition worsened, she was subjected to a series of tests.
She said Nwanneka was later diagnosed with a medical condition known as Adenocarcinoma of the maxilla – head and neck cancer.
Peace said family members had expended all they had on taking care of her sick mother without any result.
She said, “My mum is a petty trader and she stopped working since the ailment started. She has been suffering this ailment for 18 years now. We are poor and do not have the N4, 726,700 needed for her surgery.”
Peace, who noted that the family had raised N400,000, appealed to members of the public for help.
Our correspondent learnt that Nwanneka, an indigene of Enugu State, had initially undergone a surgical operation at the Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos State, from where she was referred to the NSIA LUTH Cancer Centre, Idi-Araba.
A letter signed by the Clinical Service Manager, NSIA LUTH Cancer Centre, Dr Oluwatomi Kogo, which explained Nwanneka’s health condition, read, “Mrs Joy Abugu, who resides at Oko-omi, Iju-Ota in Ogun State with her husband and children, had a painful growth and swollen mouth and pus was coming out from it. As a result, she was taken to the General Hospital Gbagada in Lagos.
“On July 13, 2021, doctors at the Gbagada General Hospital performed a surgical operation on her mouth, but through a series of tests, they later diagnosed the sickness to be cancer of the mouth.
“After the discovery, she was asked to go for further treatment and therapy, but because the family was unable to afford the funds, the operated part started to degenerate and got to the point it started bleeding daily and currently she cannot breathe well.
“When she went back to the Gbagada General Hospital this month, she was referred to NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre at LUTH in Idi-Araba, Lagos. Doctors at the Cancer Centre in LUTH said she has head and neck cancer (adenocarcinoma of the maxilla) and would require N4,726,700.00 for treatment.”
