A Benin family, on Monday, urged the Edo State Police Command to produce their son, Ebi Agbomu, who went missing after a reported arrest in May 2022.
The family told journalists that a series of unsuccessful calls to Ebi’s cell phone prompted a visit to his apartment on Country Home Motel Road, Benin, where his co-tenants said he was arrested by the police.
The victim’s father, Emmanuel Agbomu, alleged that apart from the sudden disappearance of their son, his valuables were also carted away.
He said, “When we did not hear from him, we decided to go to his neighbours, who are co-tenants. It was one of them that told us that when the police came, they were banging on his door and they (co-tenants) thought they were armed robbers. They were afraid to come out, but when he peeped through the window, he saw that they were policemen. He came down to ask them where they were taking him to.
“We have written petitions to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro; the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Lawal Tanko Jemita, and the police force headquarters in Abuja over the incident, all to no avail.
“We are calling on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba; and President Muhammadu Buhari to come to our aid and compel the police to produce our son.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 5, Tijani Momoh, confirmed the incident.
He said, “We have received their petition and we have taken statements from the complainant. We have also called for the file from the state command because that was where it was first reported.
“While waiting, we have commenced investigation to ascertain whether those who arrested him were policemen or not. There are many actions we are taking that cannot be disclosed to the public now.”
