Over the years, many celebrity marriages have hit the rocks in controversial circumstances. Saturday Beats takes a look at some short-lived celeb marriages which have crashed in recent times
Korra Obidi and Justin Dean
Singer and dancer, Korra Obidi, had a messy break-up with her estranged husband, Justin Dean, some months ago. Their break-up was particularly shocking because they had cut the picture of a perfect couple on social media.
Recall that the duo got married in December 2017 and went their separate ways in March, 2022.
Justin went on to make a series of posts calling Korra a narcissist. He wrote on Instagram, “I am tired of narcissism, cheating and lack of accountability. I have been trying since 2018 to save our marriage and if I don’t do exactly what she says, she (threatens to) divorce me (sic). I have been a prisoner that has his family used against him if she does not get exactly what she wants.”
Korra also wrote on Instagram, “I am going to be 100 per cent committed to taking care of my newborn and myself. When mama is good, the baby is good. Thank you all for reaching out. I honestly don’t know what I would do without your support. I hope that me finding the strength to come up here will make you happy.”
Nedu and Uzoamaka Ohiri
Comedian and broadcaster, Chinedu Emmanuel, aka Nedu, and Uzoamaka Ohiri got married in 2013 and the marriage reportedly crashed in 2018.
However, it wasn’t until September 2021 that Ohiri came on social media to castigate her ex-husband and accuse him of domestic violence.
She wrote on Instagram, “Do you remember when you beat me up while your mother held my new-born a few weeks after I had a caesarean operation? I still wonder how Wazobia FM allows you to host a marriage show when you’re one of the many men that beat their spouses to stupor.”
In his response, Nedu wrote, “Both times, I was cleared of all allegations and I have the necessary proof to back up my claim. If anyone should be laying claims to domestic violence, it should be me.”
He also stated that Ohiri was unfaithful to him as he was not the father of her first child. He shared the result of a DNA test to back-up his claim.
Defending herself, Ohiri stated that she was in a relationship before she started ‘dating’ Nedu and that he was aware of it (the previous relationship). Hence, she got pregnant for her ex before tying the nuptial knot with Nedu.
Tonto Dikeh and Olakunle Churchill
Arguably, one of the most controversial marriage break-ups in the entertainment industry was that of actress, Tonto Dikeh, and her ex-husband, Olakunle Churchill. They got married in August 2015 and the marriage hit the rocks in 2017.
Churchill accused Tonto of being destructive, an alcoholic and a smoker. Meanwhile, Tonto accused him of domestic violence. They both have a child together.
Damilola Adegbite and Chris Attoh
Actress, Damilola Adegbite, and actor, Chris Attoh, met on the set of the TV series, ‘Tinsel’. They eventually got married in February 2015 and they separated in September 2017 after having a child together.
In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, in October 2021, Adegbite said, “For me, it is done. The only regard I have for him (Chris Attoh) right now is that he is the father of my son, and of course, the past experiences. I don’t regret anything. Everything that happened was for a reason.”
Osas Ighodaro and Gbenro Ajibade
Actress, Osas Ighodaro, got married to her colleague, Gbenro Ajibade, in 2015 in a lavish ceremony. They had their daughter the next year, while the marriage crashed in 2019.
On February 17, 2019, Ajibade made a post on Instagram questioning Osas’ parenting skills. He wrote, “Who leaves their baby in the house and goes out to party with friends/events from 6pm to 5am? It is not the first, second, third or fourth time. The other night you slept out, you sent our baby off with a stranger to drop her off at home with the nanny so you can be out all night.”
In December 2019, Ajibade confirmed their divorce. He said, “We have divorced for a while now though not publicized. We are co-parenting.”
