It was learnt that during the robbery operation, one of the travellers, who was shot by the robbers, was rushed to the hospital in Jos but died a few hours later.
The Spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, who confirmed the death of the victim in a statement on Wednesday, said the incident happened on May 22, 2022.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Bartholomew Onyeka psc (+), in line with his mission of policing with the fear of God, has returned the sum of N5, 927, 120.00 to the family of one Mr. John Okeke of 74B, Rukuba road, Bassa Local Government Area of the state, on July 4, 2022.
“The unfortunate incident happened on May 22, 2022, when a distress call was received by the Jengre Divisional Police Headquarters, that a robbery was taking place along Fuskan mama Jengre road.
The Divisional Police Officer, SP Alobo John, swiftly mobilised his patrol team, raced to the scene, rescued the victim, cleared the road immediately, and restored normalcy to the area, while other officers immediately rushed one of the victims, Mrs. Laraba Ibrahim, to the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos, for medical attention, where the doctor confirmed her dead on arrival, as a result of a gunshot wound she sustained during the attack.
“Due to the swift and timely response by the DPO and his team, the coward robbers took to their heels, hence, other victims who ran into a nearby bush were rescued from their unlawful acts. That was also when the money of John Okeke was recovered, who was on transit from Saminaka Kaduna State Plateau.
The statement, which urged all residents of the state to continue to give timely information to the police and other security agencies to enable them to fight crime and criminality within the state, added, “The CP has put out a stern and serious warning to criminals within the state to either repent from their wicked ways or leave Plateau State or be ready to face the full weight of the law.
“The CP admonishes members of the public to go about their lawful business as the command will not rest in its fight against crime and criminality, and will continue to ensure that Plateau State is safe for all.”
