A lottery kiosk operator, identified as Mufutau Sanni, has been attacked and injured by a trader while he was mediating in a fight in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The fight reportedly occurred on Sunday morning along the MKO Abiola Way, in the Ring Road area of Ibadan.
Although some residents claimed Sanni died, others said he was injured and was being treated at a nearby hospital.
The PUNCH gathered that a trader and his customer were fighting over an issue and Sanni intervened to make peace, but one of the fighters reportedly stabbed the peacemaker.
Sanni was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital.
A resident of the area, who simply identified himself as Salam, told journalists that Sanni was injured but could not say if he had died or not.
“The man intervened to settle the fight, but he was attacked and was badly injured by one of those fighting,” he said.
Following the tension which the rumour of the death of Sanni caused, security agents were said to have been deployed to prevent breakdown of law and order in the area.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, when contacted, confirmed that somebody was injured in the clash but said he did not die.
He said this in a message sent in response to our correspondent’s inquiry.
The PPRO said, “At about 10.30am today, Sunday, July 24, 2022, upon the receipt of a distress call, operatives of the Oyo State Command responded to an alleged breach of peace situation around Mobil Area, Ring Road, Ibadan.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim ‘m’ (name undisclosed as of now) was escorted off the scene after suffering deep cuts on his body by police responders. He did not die.
“The incident is closely monitored and police operational and tactical assets have been deployed to forestall any untoward happenings. The command remains committed to the protection of lives and property.
“Updates regarding the ongoing investigation will be provided accordingly.”
