As the 2022/23 season gets underway, Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers is ready to battle compatriot Paul Onuachu for a place in the starting lineup upon his return to Genk, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Dessers spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Feyenoord after struggling to displace Onuachu for a place in the attack.
The former Heracles Almelo striker impressed during his loan spell at Feyenoord where he emerged as the top scorer of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
He however returned to his parent club at the end of the season after the Dutch club failed to meet the Genk’s valuations of €4m for the forward.
The 27-year-old, in the absence of Onuachu on Sunday, got on the score sheet as Genk suffered a 3-2 defeat to Club Brugge at the Jan Breydel Stadium on matchday one of the Pro League season.
In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, Dessers said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him at the moment but he was ready to compete with his fellow countryman for a place in the lineup.
“I do not know whether Feyenoord is still an option, you will have to ask that there,” the striker said.
“Cremonese is not a big club? But the Serie A is a top competition and I dream of that. It all remains to be seen, although I think everyone has been able to see that I give everything for Genk and that I can make it difficult for Onuachu.”
