The Nigeria Olympic Committee has congratulated Team Nigeria’s heroines after their spectacular outing at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, on Sunday.
Tobi Amusan caused a stir after smashing the world record in the women’s 100m hurdles in the semi-finals at the World Championships.
Amusan finished in a record 12.12secs, beating Kendra Harrison’s 2016 record of 12.20secs by 0.8 of a second.
She went on to bag gold in the final, though her initial finishing time of 12.06 was ruled out due to strong wind speeds.
Secretary General, NOC, Banji Oladapo, said, “The target is to win gold in Paris 2024. The NOC is happy that she has shot herself and Nigeria into reckoning.”
The NOC also applauded the efforts of long jumper Ese Brume, who won silver, after winning bronze at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
“The skill, determination and hard work shown by the athletes and their support teams throughout the championships has been an inspiration to us all. We salute their strength, passion and determination,” Oladapo added.
Also, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Tuesday hailed Amusan following her feat.
The Chairman, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa in a statement signed by the commission’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said Amusan’s triumph at the championships brought glory to the nation.
Amusan’s victory coincided with the National Diaspora Day, when Nigeria celebrates all her Diasporans.
