An escapee from a custodial centre at Benin, Edo State, Festus Okoeguare, and one other, Nancinant Joshua, have been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly vandalising an electricity cable.
The suspects were caught vandalising the power installation at Hallmark University Junction along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogbere, in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that Okoeguare escaped during the #EndSARS protest when Edo prison was attacked.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Monday, said the suspects were arrested on July 16, 2022, following information received by policemen at the Ogbere divisional headquarters.
The PPRO said, “On sighting the security men, the hoodlums took to their heels while a getaway vehicle they parked quickly zoomed off with the cable.
“Other suspects were hotly chased and two among them were apprehended. On interrogation, it was discovered that Festus Okoeguare was an escapee from White House Correctional Centre located at Sapele Road, Benin City. It was further revealed that the escapee was convicted for murder in 2010 and was sentenced to death by hanging. It was during the #EndSARS protest that the prison was broken into and he escaped.”
