One of the four students who drowned while swimming at the Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State, on Tuesday, has been found.
The female student was identified by the police during a search operation on Wednesday.
PUNCH Metro had reported that 10 secondary school leavers, aged between 14 and 15, went to swim at the beach to celebrate the success of their West African Senior School Examination.
They were said to be pupils of the Kuramo Senior College, Lekki.
While six of them were rescued alive, four were missing.
The spokesperson for the Elegushi Beach Management, Chief Ayuba Elegushi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the pupils were not properly registered.
He also noted that the incident happened at an unmanned section of the beach.
Elegushi told our correspondent on Wednesday that one of the missing students had been found dead.
He said, “One body has been recovered. It is the body of a female student who was one of the four missing teenagers.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, also confirmed the development.
He said a search was ongoing for the rest of the missing students, adding that their parents had been contacted.
