Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Usaini Gumel, has again warned officers and men of the command against extortion and unprofessional conduct.
Gumel, while addressing senior police officers in a press conference on Monday in Sokoto, reiterated that the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has vowed never to condone indiscipline in any form within the police.
He said, “Discipline and professionalism remain the bedrock of the current IGP and the Force Management Team. It is on this note the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the IGP, charges all police officers to protect the citizens with integrity and to always serve them with compassion.
“It is on this note that three policemen were dismissed who were caught on viral videos dignifying and justifying extortion, violently abusing the right of citizens they sworn to serve and protect.
“In a like manner, all Policemen of Sokoto State command are seriously warned against such misconduct and any erring officer found wanting will be viewed seriously.
He said the security situation in recent times showed a concerning trend of an increase in the threat posed to the nation by terror elements, including bandits, kidnappers, and other highly organized and mobile violent criminal syndicates.
“On the foregoing, let me keep assuring members of the public that the police in the state are currently strengthening the existing levels of collaboration and synergy with the military and other relevant security agencies to reverse the current internal security slide.
“We cannot achieve this goal alone without stakeholder’s engagement so that we can defeat these criminals who are our common enemies and hell-bent on altering our values for communal peace and security,” he added.
Meanwhile, the command paraded three suspects specializing in motorcycle theft across the state.
The suspects include one Yashir Shehu of the Bado area within the metropolis which was arrested when he stole a Yamaha Motorcycle belonging to one Inspector Mustapha Abdullahi, who went for treatment at the hospital.
