Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has been named in the English Carabao Cup Team of the Round of 32.
Iwobi put up a man-of-the-match performance for Everton in Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup victory at Fleetwood Town.
Iwobi starred for 90 minutes and made an assist — his ninth for the club — as Everton were made to work hard for their win against a dogged Fleetwood outfit, but Demarai Gray’s 28th minute strike ensured the Blues’ progressed to the third round of the competition.
The Nigeria international had coolly picked out a slide-rule pass to Gray, who made no mistake with a curling finish into the far corner of the net.
The game was his fourth of the campaign with the Super Eagles star delivering yet another high-calibre performance in central midfield.
The Carabao Cup via its Twitter handle shared its player ratings as per Whoscored, and Iwobi completed a midfield trio, alongside Steven Alzate(Brighton) and Mateusz Klich(Leeds United).
David Cornell(Preston North End), Jaden Brown(Sheffield Wednesday), Carl Piergianni(Stevenage), Kal Naismith(Bristol City), Ronan Curtis(Portsmouth), Will Evans(Newport County), and Kane Wilson(Bristol City) complete the eleven.
The midfielder also received plaudits from his coach Frank Lampard following his man-of-the-match display.
Lampard said, “Alex is playing at a really high level where he plays – midfield, higher up the pitch.
“He works off the ball and he’s a huge player for this squad. We’re delighted with his performances and since I’ve been here he’s been getting better and better. He’s started the season in great form.”
Everton’s attention now reverts back to the Premier League, with a visit to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday where they hope to record their first win of the campaign.
