A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Ondo State, Chief Oladipo Quadri, said the defection of a former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, from the party would not have any effect on the party, adding that he (Shekarau) was not a disciplined politician.
Shekarau exited from the NNPP to the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano on Monday, urging his supporters to work for the PDP’s victory in the 2023 general election.
Speaking on the development on Tuesday, the NNPP chieftain said the defection of the former Kano Governor spoke volume of the kind of politician he (Shekarau) was.
Quadri, who is the candidate of the party for the Federal House of Representatives in Owo/Ose Federal Constituency of the state, said the defection by politicians showed lack of political discipline and not good for the country’s democracy.
He said, “In Nigeria today, there is no discipline on the part of many of our politicians. They jump from one party to another. More worrisome is the calibre of some politicians who suppose to be role models to the up and coming ones.
“For our democracy to thrive and be sustainable, there must be political discipline, selfless service and respect for the party’s constitution, hierarchy, ideals and aspirations.”
He encouraged party faithful across the country to be focused, describing the NNPP as the third force which was out to rescue Nigeria and Nigerians.
The House of Representatives hopeful said the party in Owo and Ose was daily receiving scores of defectors from the two “giant parties” in the country.
He expressed confidence that his antecedents in the federal constituency will place him ahead of other contestants in next year’s general election.
