One person was shot dead while a community leader sustained serious injuries on Monday as leadership tussle between two rival groups at Igbide community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State turned bloody.
PUNCH Metro gathered that trouble had earlier started on Sunday evening when troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion at Oleh in Isoko South LGA were mobilised alongside the police to quell the brewing fracas between the factional groups involved in the leadership tussle.
Combined teams of security operatives comprising troops, the police and other law enforcement agencies conducted show of force patrol on the streets of the community on Sunday in the efforts to restore law and order and build confidence of the locals.
Consequently, the situation was brought under control on Sunday evening while the police invited the factional leaders for mediation.
However, our correspondent gathered that at about 9am on Monday, further information was despatched to the leadership of the 181 Amphibious Battalion at Oleh by one of the factional leaders who raised the alarm that his community Vice President who was riding in a car with another person within the community had been shot by yet to be identified persons.
It was gathered that the incident led to the death of the passenger while the factional community Vice President sustained some injuries on his hand.
Security sources said that on receipt of the distress call, troops from the Battalion at Oleh were again despatched on patrol to the community to link up with the police to de-escalate the tension created while efforts were ongoing to track the unidentified gunman that shot the duo.
The injured was medically attended to by the military personnel while the remains of the deceased had been taken to the morgue.
The Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion was said to have moved to Igbide community to further support the police in managing the crisis as of the time of filing this report.
