The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old mother and her lover, who sold their baby to a maternity home owner for N500,000.
PUNCH Metro reports that the 20-year-old mother, Ola Chima, hails from Amangwu Edda community, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Her lover, Jonah Ogbuagu, also a bricklayer, impregnated her out of wedlock in August 2021.
It was gathered that Ola delivered of the baby in April 2022 at her aunt’s house at Obigbo, Rivers State, where she hid during the pregnancy.
After giving birth, she connived with Ogbuagu and sold the baby.
The Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated this in a statement, on Tuesday.
He said the lovers sold the baby to a maternity home owner (aka Mummy Abigail), who was arrested at Ovuma, also in the council area.
SP Anyanwu said, “Mummy Abigail runs a maternity home which she uses as a cover for her illicit trade.
“The suspects have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for necessary actions and prosecution.”
He further added that men of the Command also arrested a two-man syndicate of child traffickers, who specialise in stealing, abducting, kidnapping, and selling of children.
He gave their names as Otuu Chizaram, 24, from Ndukwe Akpoha; and Agbii Precious, 20, in the Afikpo North LGA of the state.
