Following the devastating effect of flooding, which has rendered many residents homeless, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has appealed to the state government to provide relief materials to flood victims across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
This, the assembly said, would reduce their suffering and improve their standard of living.
Speaker of the House, Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the appeal during plenary in Lafia on Monday when the Majority Leader of the House, Tanko Tunga, raised the issue under matters of public importance.
The Speaker said, “I want to use this medium to appreciate Hon. Tanko Tunga and all members for your contributions on this subject matter. I have also directly been affected as 50 per cent of my people are living in riverine communities .
“The devastating effects of flooding are huge across the state as many lives, animals, buildings, farmlands, among other properties, have been destroyed, and many residents of the state are also homeless.
“It is in view of this that I want to call on the state government to provide relief materials to the flood victims without delay. I also want to call on the state government to relocate communities affected by flood to safer places for their comfortability and to improve on their standard of living.”
Speaker Abdullahi further urged the state government to provide more funds to the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, to enable the agency to discharge its duties effectively.
“I also want to call on both the National and State emergency agencies, National Orientation Agency, Nasarawa Urban Development Board, among other agencies saddled with the responsibilities of tackling flooding and development plans to be more proactive in their activities so that the society will be better for everyone of us,” he added.
Some of the House members who also lamented about the flooding situation in the state are John Osewu; Doma South Constituency, Daniel Ogazi; Kokona East Constituency, Danladi Jatau; Kokona West Constituency, Mohammed Okpoku; Udege/Loko Constituency, and David Maiyaki; Karu/Gitata Constituency, among others.
Earlier, the Majority Leader of the House, Tanko Tunga, while raising the issue, said, “This year’s flooding has inflicted injuries on the lives of many people across the state.
“It has caused a lot of damages to our people, destroyed houses, farmlands and properties. I am calling on the government to do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of the flood victims across the state.”
