A youth group under the aegis of Presidential Support Council has demanded for the resignation of Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, as the National Youths Coordinator of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2023 general election.
The APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, was reported to have approved the appointment of Governor Bello to lead youths of the party into the presidential campaigns which is expected to kick off soon.
Speaking during a press conference in Lafia on Tuesday, the national leader of the group, Kassim Muhammad, said it was wrong for the Kogi State governor to be appointed to lead youths of the party into the campaigns and demanded that he resigns the appointment immediately.
He said, “During the APC presidential primary election, we heard that the Kogi governor was the only person that kicked against the zoning of the 2023 presidency to the southern part of the country.
“APC as a party in its magnanimity, approved that all youthful aspirants should pay fourty per cent of the nomination forms fee, but, Yahaya Bello, knowing that he is not a youth, paid N100 million, which was 100 percent of the fees.
“Now that he has accepted the appointment of APC youths coordinator, he should tell the party and the Nigerian youths if he had ever organized a single national youths conference or a meeting for the unity and progress of the youths of this country.
“Governor Yahaya Bello is too big for such a role, so the appointment should be reconsidered. He also does not belong to the youth’s grade of the society, that is why we are urging him to resign honourably in the next one week or face a massive protest.”
Kassim, who said the Presidential Support Council was heading 300 other APC support groups across the country, further said that for the Kogi state governor to remain relevant in the campaign council, he should be appointed as the North-Central Zonal Campaign Director of the party after resigning his appointment as the National Youths Coordinator.
