Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have attacked an army checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu, along Amechi-Agbani Road, in the Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing an unconfirmed number of soldiers and policemen.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened around 7.30am on Tuesday.
According to sources, the hoodlums stormed the checkpoint in two Lexus SUVs and one Toyota Sienna.
Prior to the Tuesday attack, gunmen had attacked the checkpoint at least three times.
The previous attacks claimed no fewer than 12 lives, including about eight policemen.
Sources told our correspondent that the gunmen, when they stormed the checkpoint on Tuesday, opened fire on the combined team of policemen and military.
Our correspondent gathered that all the soldiers and policemen at the checkpoint were killed.
Motorists and residents were reported to have scampered for safety during the incident.
A motorist, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Passengers in tricycle going to Agbani from Amechi are being manhandled by soldiers. They are going to villages searching for young men and packing them to their barracks in chains.”
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
