The Commissioner of Police in charge of Bayelsa State, Mr Benjamin Okolo, has ordered the Command’s Provost Marshal to carry out an orderly room trial of some policemen who were caught in a viral video assaulting two citizens with a stick.
A statement by the Spokesman for the Command, Asinim Butswat, identified the three officers as Agip Teiwei, Bedford Emolade, and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Peter Frank.
The officers reportedly brutalised the victims, who are brothers, over alleged expired vehicles at the Akenfa area of Yenagoa, the state capital, on September 26.
They were caught on camera at the scene while assaulting the two brothers.
One of the brothers, who filmed the assault, claimed that the policemen threatened to kill his brother over vehicle papers.
In the video, one of the brothers tackled the policeman, who physically assaulted him, while another officer warned the other one to stop recording the scene.
The man recording the video said the police were threatening to kill his brother because of vehicle particulars and driver’s licence, labelling them as thieves.
Butswat, however, said that Frank had been queried while Teiwei and Emolade were undergoing the orderly room trial.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined organisation and the Bayelsa State Command cannot condone any act of indiscipline by its officers,” he said.
