Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on the citizens to work collectively towards the greatness of the country.
The governor made the call on Saturday during his speech at the 62nd Independence Day parade held in Onikan, Lagos.
He said, “Although we may not have fully attained the heights dreamed of by our founding fathers, we still have every reason to celebrate this historic day. Every first of October is a time to reflect on the journey of our nationhood, to rededicate ourselves to the task of nation-building, and continue to work hard at building a formidable nation in Africa and the world at large.
“This year also marks the 23rd year since the birth of our Fourth Republic, our most successful democratic journey in the history of our nation.
“I am personally fully persuaded and confident that Nigeria is on an irreversible march to greatness, economically, politically, socially and culturally. There is no gainsaying that the world awaits the greatness of our nation; and by our collective efforts, we will rise above all odds and take our rightful place in history.”
Sanwo-Olu also urged residents to refrain from politics of division and bitterness as the 2023 elections approached.
He added, “And as the 2023 general elections approach, I enjoin everyone to focus on issues and refrain from the politics of division and bitterness.
“We must respect divergent opinions and respect the fact that the beauty of democracy lies in the fact that we will not all share the same ideological and political views. What we want, and what is not negotiable, is a better country.”
