Supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, on Monday, shut down Asaba, Delta State’s capital, and Calabar, Cross River State, in solidarity with the candidate.
In Calabar, the supporters, mostly youths, who staged a road walk, converged on Eleven-Eleven from where they marched through major streets also known as the Carnival route such as Mary Slessor, Marian Road, MCC, and Murtala Mohammed highway.
The rally caused traffic gridlock for some hours.
For the Asaba rally, members of various support groups under the “Obidient” Movement converged at the Inter Bau Flyover, marched through Nnebisi Road to the traffic light at Ezinei Junction, and returned to the starting point.
The state coordinator of one of the groups, Kingsley Imoni-Ogbe of YES Peter Obi Support Group, said the former Anambra State governor was the only candidate among the contenders that could turn things around for good in the country.
He said the rally was a demonstration of the fact that Nigerians are tired of the old politicians.
Speaking to journalists, the Cross River State Chairman of the party, Ambassador Ogar Osim, said they had estimated only a two million-man march in support of Obi and LP but that the crowd far exceeded 2.5 million people.
“What we have seen today is beyond description. This is to send a message to other parties who seem to under-rate our strength not to brag any further.
“You can see that Nigerians are very tired of other parties that bastardised our collective gains and channelled them into selfish paths. You can see that Nigerians are now rooting for Labour Party and indeed Peter Obi.”
