The All Progressives Congress Senator Uba Sani, New Nigerian Peoples Party’s Suleiman Hunkuyi, and Peoples Democratic Party’s Isa Ashiru were among the 17 governorship candidates to contest the 2023 gubernatorial election in Kaduna State.
However, the Labour Party’s Governorship candidate, Hon Jonathan Asake, who’s also a former National President of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, was missing from the list of candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Instead of Asake, who resigned as the SOKAPU boss to join the governorship race, one Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim was listed as the candidate of the LP for the 2023 governorship race in the state.
According to the INEC’s list of governorship candidates for the state, 18 political parties were listed with the exception of the Boot Party not having a candidate.
Senator Caleb Zagi, Dr. Andrew Duya and Ibrahim Adamu were listed as candidates for African Democratic Congress, All Progressive Grand Alliance and Social Democratic Party.
While Isa Mohammed Ashiru, Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, and Hayatuddeen Lawal Makarfi were listed as candidates for People’s Democratic Party, New Nigeria People’s Party and People’s Redemption Party respectively.
Meanwhile, prior to the release of the list, there was tension that the Governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Uba Sani, might not make the INEC’s list because of the pending court case by one of the aspirants, Mohammed Sani Sha’aban, contesting the party’s primary which produced the lawmaker.
Sha’aban in a suit filed at the Federal High Court, Kaduna with case number FHC/KD/CS/79/2022, dragged the APC to the court as the first defendant, Senator Uba Sani as the second defendant and INEC as the third defendant.
The court is expected to resume hearing on the case on Wednesday next week.
