The Director General of the Delta State Orientation Bureau, Eugene Uzum, has canvassed for the construction of additional dams in Nigeria as a measure to checkmate incessant flooding.
He made the call while speaking on a national television programme alongside other guests who discussed the ravaging flooding across the coaster parts of the country.
Uzum stressed the need to build more dams to supplement the Kainji and Shiroro dams. He said although the dams were said to be bigger than the one in Cameroon but they still could not stem flooding in the country.
He noted that apart from the new dams absorbing excessive water during the raining seasons, the dammed water could be used in the country for irrigation farming in the dry seasons.
He stated the various measures the Delta State Government had immediately put on ground to manage the flooding situation in the state, following the alert from NiMet and other weather forcast agencies.
According to him, an all embracing committee, headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, had been set up, among other moves, to manage the situation in the state.
He added that the state orientation bureau had vigorously taken the sensitisation of the people, particularly residents in the flood prone areas of the state, on the flooding situation.
Others who spoke during the interview included the Director General of Nigeria Meteorological Agency, Kogi State Commissioner for Information and a representative of the National Emergency Management Authority.
