Borno State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over a looming security threat in the state as a result of illegal mining in three communities in Bayo Local Government Area of the state.
The communities; Wuyo, Jaradali and Balbaya Bayo, which boarders Gombe State to the South, is about 270 kilometers from Maiduguri.
The state legislature on October 6 consequently passed a resolution seeking the intervention of the state government and the security agencies to halt illegal mining in the communities to forestall security breaches and environmental degradation.
At a session presided over by the Speaker, Abdulkareem Lawan, the member representing Bayo State Constituency, Maigari Abare, moved a motion of urgent public importance, complaining that illegal mining had thrown the communities into fear of North-West-like banditry.
This, he said, was in addition to the environmental damage with alteration of the ecology as well as air, water and soil pollution.
