Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, scored his first goal for Ajax who returned to winning ways with a 4-2 win over Volendam in the Eredivisie on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Bassey scored in the 39th minute to double Ajax’s lead after Dusan Tadic had shot the Dutch champions into the lead 17 minutes earlier from the penalty spot.
The win put a halt to Ajax’s run of four straight games without a win (three defeats, one draw).
The Eredivisie champions went into the game on the back of the 6-1 home loss to Napoli, on match day three of the UEFA Champions League last Tuesday.
Bassey’s strike was his first in almost two years as he last scored a goal on November 29, 2020, in Glasgow Rangers’ 4-0 thumping of Falkirk in a Scottish League Cup game.
In France, Josh Maja, continued his impressive scoring run as he netted in Bordeaux’s 2-0 home win against Metz in the French second division on Saturday.
Maja opened the scoring two minutes in added time of the first half after tucking away a penalty kick.
Maja has scored a goal in each of Bordeaux’s last three games and has taken his tally for the league to seven in 11 fixtures.
Fransergio made it 2-0 to seal the win for Bordeaux in the 92nd minute.
The 23-year-old is now the joint top scorer in the French second tier.
It has been an impressive season for Maja who scored just one goal last season.
Bordeaux remain top in the league table on 23 points.
In Belgium, Paul Onuachu, scored a brace for Genk in their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kortrijk.
Onuachu who ended his goals drought last week in Genk’s 2-1 victory over Oostende gave his side the lead in the 36th minute with a powerful header that left Kortrijk goalkeeper Marko Ilic in limbo.
It was his fourth goal against Kortrijk having scored in his last three encounters.
Unfortunately for the Smurfs, Selemani drew level for Kortrijk in the 58th minute but the Nigerian striker forward sealed victory for Genk in the 77th minute from the spot after Kortrijk defender D’Haene handled the ball in the box.
