The acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, has urged tasked party members on understanding and sacrifice for the greater good of the party.
Both understanding and sacrifice, he said, would help the party to forge ahead for peace and keep a united front ahead of next year’s general elections.
Wabara made the call in his opening remarks while submitting the reconciliation report held at the party’s National Secretariat on Friday in Abuja.
The main opposition party has been enmeshed in an internal rift after the party’s presidential convention in May. Trouble started after the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, failed to clinch the presidential and vice presidential tickets of the party.
After PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, announced the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate, Wike and his team called for the resignation of the party Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, on grounds that the northern region can’t hold all top positions in the party.
Thereafter, the party constituted a reconciliation committee to consult feuding parties in its bid to resolve the internal crisis.
Speaking at the meeting, Wabara said, “We carried out our assignment with an open mind. 2023 is for PDP to win or lose. A lot of egos have been hurt on both sides.
“Our position is advisory and if we are indeed the conscience of the party, then we should be free, fair and courageous. The situation requires a little bit of sacrifice and understanding.”
In his remarks, Ayu appreciated the BoT members for their efforts in attaining peace in the party, and for the party’s victory.
The meeting was attended by former Minister of Works, Tanimu Turaki, Shuaibu Oyedokun, Ibrahim Idris, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Esther Uduehi, and Zainab Maina.
