The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that one person died when a 40 feet truck fell off the Alete Bridge axis of the East-West Road in the Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Friday and knocked off two other vehicles.
One of the cars, a Sports Utility Vehicle, plunged into the river, killing one of its occupants, while others survived. This came about one week after six persons escaped death by a whisker along the same road when a truck fell on a vehicle, but the occupants were able to run out. The deplorable state of the Eleme section of the East-West Road has been on the discourse over the years.
The Sector of the FRSC, Rivers State Command, Corps Commander, Salisu Galadunchi, who confirmed the incident to City Round, said that the road needed urgent attention.
Galadunchi said, “One person died. Two persons were inside that SUV that fell inside the water. One came out alive and one died. We have been running around to find a way of bringing out the vehicle. The unit commander and others are there to ensure that the vehicle is removed and cleared off the road. It is a terrible situation and that road needs urgent attention and we join our voices to call for the urgent repair of the road to avoid further crashes and loss of lives.”
