• Arsenal extend lead, City loses, Tottenham level City
With the 1-0 scoreline, Liverpool and Manchester City’s contest at Anfield saw the end to an exciting match week in the English Premier League.
Here’s a review of what went down this match week and what to expect in coming weeks:
Salah stops City
Mohammed Salah scored the winning goal as Liverpool pulled their weight in an excellent performance to hand Manchester City their first defeat of the season.
Alisson’s 76th minute clearance was skilfully controlled by the Egyptian who raced past Joao Cancelo and Ederson to score the winning goal.
Manchester City had a series of chances but couldn’t put any in the back of the net. The contest that had hearts racing in the second half, saw Phil Foden’s effort ruled out following a VAR review that identified a foul by Erling Haaland on Fabinho in the build-up to the goal.
Liverpool became the first team in 19 Premier League fixtures to stop City from scoring. They move up to the eighth place in the table, with 13 points, while the champions remain second on 23 points.
Arsenal japa with four points clear
Arsenal are four points clear at the top of the league table after beating Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road, thanks to a half time strike by England’s young midfielder Bukayo Saka.
The Gunners are riding high on 27 points, while Leeds drop to 15th with nine points.
The match had earlier been interrupted and players brought off the pitch for 36 minutes due to a power failure that affected the referee’s communication with VAR.
Returning from half-time break, Leeds had several opportunities to equalise with Patrick Bamford’s second-half missed penalty, the peak of them.
The exciting match didn’t end there, as more drama unfolded in stoppage time, as Arsenal defender, Gabriel Magalhaes, was sent off following a clash with Bamford. Leeds were then awarded a second penalty but, this time, following a VAR review, both decisions were overturned with Gabriel’s red card downgraded to a yellow card and a free kick awarded to Arsenal instead of a penalty against them, causing Leeds United their first home defeat of the season.
The result lead Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to break history as their best league start in top-tier football ever, with nine wins out of 10 games. The Gunners are ‘gunning’.
Sky Sports analyst and former Manchester United forward, Michaeal Owen explained why the Gunners could win the title this season. Owen said, “Arsenal could do a Leicester” (If you know, you know).
‘Draw soup’ at Old Trafford
Just beneath third place Chelsea, in the league table, neither Manchester United or Newcastle United could get the upper hand as the match ended in a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
The result leaves the Red Devils in fifth place on 16 points and Newcastle one place back and a point behind on 15 points
Mount’s double leg work
Mason Mount was the hero of the afternoon scoring twice in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Aston Villa.
The Blues’ excellent form under for Brighton manager, Graham Potter, continued as the game made it their fourth consecutive win in all competitions under the new manager.
The result keeps the Blues in fourth place on 19 points, while Steven Gerrard’s side remain at 16th place with nine points.
Southampton delivered from loosing
Southampton finally ended their losing streak of four straight losses at St. Mary’s Stadium with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United.
Romain Perraud netted in the 20th minute, but Declan Rice responded with a fine finish midway through half time, for David Moyes’ team.
They however, remain in the relegation zone sitting in 18th place on the table, while West Ham move up to 12th.
Tottenham catch up with city
Tottenham had their best start in Premier League history, masterminded by Antonio Conte as they beat Everton 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London.
England’s captain, Harry Kane, scored a penalty that cemented their win and took them to 23 points, same with Manchester City, although they remain in third place due to City’s advantage in goal difference.
Kane has now produced an attacking run in each of his last nine games. An EPL goat indeed.
Match week 12 starts on Tuesday, October 12, 2022.
