Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph, believes Francis Uzoho’s confidence would have done him a world of good following his heroics against Manchester United last Thursday at Old Trafford, The PUNCH reports.
The Nigeria international, who stood in for the injured first-choice keeper Fabiano, kept United at bay for 93 minutes, making 12 incredible saves as the Red Devils were frustrated for the majority of the game before Scot McTominay’s 93rd-minute winner sealed victory for United.
Uzoho had previously come in for some criticisms in recent times, but Dosu – who kept two clean sheets in three caps for the Eagles – admits it’s time to put that to bed.
The Atlanta ‘96 Olympics gold medalist said, “The saves he made against Manchester United, were all outstanding. When you’re a goalkeeper and you make big saves like that in a game, it’s the equivalent of scoring a goal and he deserved that credit. It was a great moment for him and I believe that will help his confidence in the next game for the Eagles next month.
“I think he had a fantastic night at Old Trafford and he’ll gain confidence from his performance.”
Former Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh added,” These are the kind of games we all love to see our players perform well in European competitions and he was a delight to watch, which is good for him and the Eagles.
“Uzoho was simply outstanding against Manchester United. He took his chance very well and I hope he continues as it will help boost his form and confidence for Nigeria.”
Prior to the game against Manchester United, the 23-year-old had only played 134 minutes so far this season.
Former Eagles left back, Ifeanyi Udeze, also heaped plaudits on Uzoho.
He said, “It was one of his best games since I have been watching him and performing like that against a big like Manchester United makes it even more special for me as a Nigerian.
“He hadn’t had the best performances with the Eagles, so to be able to bounce back at such a big stage is incredible – the club’s second choice for that matter.
“But he came in and absolutely nailed down the position and kept United at bay until the 93rd minute. It will help his confidence when he plays for Nigeria.”
