According to an Indian publication, Khel Now, Nigerian striker, Sylvester Igbonu, has quit Indian club, NorthEast United, barely a month after joining the club, citing poor accommodation as the reason for leaving, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The former FC Ebedei and ex-FC Midtjylland striker was the Highlanders’ sixth and final signing for the ISL 2022/23 season.
The website added that the 32-year-old striker, who joined the Guwahati-based side on a one-year deal ahead of the 2022/23 Indian Super League season, wasn’t available for selection for the club’s first two games because he joined the team very late.
His arrival in Guwahati was delayed due to visa issues as he was stuck in Russia. He joined the team in the third week of October and took some time to settle in.
The Nigerian finally made his first appearance for the Highlanders in a home clash against East Bengal.
However, having made just a single appearance for the club, the six-cap Super Eagles striker quit the club.
“Sly has left the club due to poor accommodation. He was very disappointed to see the state of the place that the club provided him,” Khel Now quoted a source within the club.
“Apparently, many players are unhappy with the living conditions, but Sylvester Igbonu was the one who chose to walk out first.”
NorthEast United previously accommodated their players and staff at Radisson Blu, which is one of the city’s two five-star hotels. But, this year, the players are being accommodated in flats near the stadium.
