Against the backdrop of a terror alert issued by the United States of America, some political parties have advised the Federal Government to act decisively and secure the country and her citizens.
In separate interviews with our correspondent, the parties said rather than trivialise the security warning, effort should be made to treat it with seriousness.
National Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Rufus Aiyenigba, said, “We are all living in despair. Across the length and breadth of the country, nowhere is safe. This alert should not be politicised because the United States Embassy is not known to issue statements for the fun of it. This should be a wake up call by the government and security agencies to be on top of their game.
“Let us not forget that US intelligence is second to none. We will be doing a lot of disservice to ourselves if we choose to ignore this warning.
Also speaking, Spokesperson of the Young Progressives Party, Egbeola Wale-Martins, noted that the security situation in the country called for action, not rhetoric.
“There is nothing political about the terror alert issued by the United States because the security reality in Nigeria is public knowledge and the lackadaisical attitude of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)-led government until the recent aggressive onslaught on the terrorists when the seat of power became threatened, has hitherto been legendary.
“The US has been known to issue security advisories when the need arises to warn their citizens around the world, hence this is not peculiar to Nigeria and should not be politicised. The Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Police Force also issue security alerts from time to time for the benefit of citizens and if that was not politicised, then this latest one coming from the US shouldn’t be politicised. It should be acted upon by a docile government that is known to be extremely slow to act,” he added.
However, presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party, Yabagi Sani, has dismissed the security alert, saying “Nigeria is bigger than this. If truly, they had an intelligence report, what stopped them from giving it to our security agencies? We won’t succumb to this,” he added.
