Domo Okara, coach of Nigerian Women’s Football League champions, Bayelsa Queens, says their target is to win the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.
The Yenagoa outfit clash with holders Mamelodi Sundowns, Egyptian champions Wadi Degla and TP Mazembe in Group B and will hope to make it to the next round of the competition.
Bayelsa, who won their first Nigerian Women’s Premier Leaguetitle in 2001, have progressed to become one of the strongest female sides in Nigeria with a total of six league titles, with this year’s trophy their latest.
Since 2021, Bayelsa have celebrated at least four trophies, including the Betsy Obaseki Cup, Aiteo Cup, NWFL and WAFU B Women’s Champions League – all under Okara.
Following his successes, the 45-year-old is aiming to continue his fairytale run in the dugout of the Prosperity Ladies, this time on the continental stage.
“I feel delighted to be competing with the best clubs in Africa, we are going to give our best and learn as well,” Okara told CAFOnline.com.
“It means a lot for us honestly, we were delighted to compete in a tournament of this magnitude, and as WAFU B winners as well, it was a great feeling.
“Our target is to win the CAF Women’s Champions League trophy in Morocco. I know it’s going to be very difficult, but we promise to give our best.”
On her own part, Mary Aderemi, who scored one goal with three assists in the WAFU B qualifiers, feels their chances are bright.
“We will give our best to make our state and the nation proud, our priority is the trophy but hard work and focus is the main thing that leads to victory,” Aderemi added.
Bayelsa will start their campaign against champions Sundowns at the Stade de Marrakech October 31, before a showdown with TP Mazembe three days later and the final group tie with Wadi Degla November 6.
