Momodu stated that the party appreciated the fact that the G5 governors – Rivers state Governor Nyesome Wike and his colleagues in Benue State – Samuel Ortom, Oyo – Seyi Makinde, Enugu – Ifeanyi Ugwanyi, and Abia – Okezie Ikpeazu were still respectable leaders of the party, adding that they would continue to work for the reconciliation process even though they were angered.
Momodu stated this at a press briefing while responding to questions posed by journalists at the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Office on Thursday in Abuja.
He noted, ‘’I have no idea whether they have dumped the party. The day they have dumped (the party), they will announce that they have dumped the party and you will be the first to know.’’
The G5 govs had pulled out of the Atiku Campaign Council, citing the refusal of the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, to resign from his position over lopsidedness in the leadership hierarchy of the party.
This week, Governor Wike invited some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress to commission projects executed by the state government and previous romances with members of the current administration. This action sent fears to the PDP about whether he might dump the party.
The governor also offered the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, logistics support should he planned to pay Rivers State a visit for his rally.
He further stated, ”As for the Atiku campaign, we remain steadfast, we remain focused and nothing distracts our attention. So far, they are still in the party, and we are happy they are at the party. There is still room for reconciliation, all they are saying is that they are not happy and we will continue to pray that peace will reign in the party.”
On the issue of the economy, he revealed that when the presidential candidate of the PDP was the vice president to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he had limitations to the roles he played, saying he was assigned to lead the country’s economic recovery team which he did well.
‘’The specific role given to our principal was in the area of the economy. We had the best under that government and he has been able to assemble the best brains at home and abroad. We are very proud, and that is why he said he will continue from where he stopped and that is why we are using ‘Recover Nigeria.’
On the issue of promises to provide jobs for the youths, and security among others by the sitting government, he explained that the government had performed below expectations because they could not give what they did not have.
‘’You can’t give what you don’t have and that is why Atiku is the best choice. What he has been able to do in public life and what he has been able to do in private life; when you look at them, you will know that he is the most experienced and prepared candidate in the race today. There is none close to him. He is the one that operated at the national level, so he knows what to do immediately.’’
